Established in 1983, the Franco-German Journalism Prize is awarded for outstanding journalistic achievements that uniquely contribute to a better understanding of Franco-German and European relations. It is open and inclusive for all media (audio, video, print, online, social media) and will be awarded in three different content categories from 2022 (see below for categories).
The FGJP is awarded in the categories “News/News Formats”, “Documentation” and “Investigation”. Over and beyond these, the “Special Jury Prize” category honours contributions from all the aforementioned categories that the jury found particularly noteworthy. Awarded across categories in addition to this is a “Young Talent Prize” for entries submitted by journalists under 30 years of age
The prize is open to all authors and editorial teams irrespective of whether they are working freelance, for public-sector or for commercial media. Employees of the FGJP member organizations can submit entries, as well as former prize-winners and jury members in the respectively other prize categories.
Three contributions can be submitted per author or team of authors, all in the same or in different categories. There is no limit for the number of authors per contribution, but authors need to submit their joint contribution together, and must all be listed with their name and age. If an award is won, the prize money needs to be split equally between all the parties involved. Submitting the same contribution alone is not possible.
Three contributions (individual contributions or series) can be submitted per entrant or team of entrants until March 1 of the respective award year. All submitted contributions will be initially reviewed by a preliminary jury, and then by a main jury.
Contributions from all types of media (audio, video, print, online, social media) can be submitted. Entire (audio, video) broadcasts can be submitted as well as self-contained series on a subject. With longer serials, a maximum of five episodes needs to be selected exemplarily. Temporary online contributions can be submitted if they were published during the registration period.
Loose serials in their totality are not admitted for the competition. Books, whole newspapers or magazines and scientific publications are not admitted for the competition. They can be nominated and/or suggested by the jury for the special prize category at most.

The award ceremony is traditionally held in early summer as part of a festive gala with guests from the Franco-German media world, alternately in Paris and Berlin. All the nominees are invited to the respective ceremony along with the many guests of honour.
No, none of the three prizes permits own entries. The young talent and special prizes are selected by a special jury each from the entries in the other categories, while the Great Media Prize is awarded on the FGJP’s initiative.
Yes, they can suggest contributions for the organizers to inform the author and/or editorial team and invite them to submit an entry afterwards.
The age information serves to answer the question if the respective contribution can also be considered in the young talent category.
The creation of a contribution gives rise to copyrights and ancillary copyrights for various rights holders. Persons submitting an entry need to confirm that they have acquired the latter’s corresponding rights so that the contribution can be registered for the award, included in the competition there, and also shown if it wins a prize. This also means that contributions or parts thereof can be shown in the reporting about the prize and programmes of its organizers, and published online. The organizers therefore accept no liability for claims possibly asserted by the holders of copyrights or ancillary copyrights.
Admitted for the competition are all entries that were first published from the day after the previous year’s registration deadline up to and including the award year’s registration deadline, and accord with the spirit of the Franco-German Journalism Prize described in the preamble , as well as the aforementioned prize criteria. The contributions and documents need to have arrived on the server of the Franco-German Journalism Prize by 12 midnight of the closing date at the latest.
The organizers of the Franco-German Journalism Prize appoint the juries, which are composed of German and French media representatives. Cultural institutions can be additionally represented in the jury with one person each. One chairperson is elected per jury.
The prize is endowed with € 6,000 per category. The Great Franco-German Media Prize is unendowed.
